Is Angel Reese the best rebounder in the WNBA?
Yes, by a distance since 2019. Her finishing is still below average, though it has improved every year and surged late in 2026.
Angel Reese grabs 1.4 more offensive rebounds a game than anyone else
Angel Reese averaged 4.8 offensive and 7.3 defensive rebounds in 2026, 12.1 in all, and led the WNBA for a third straight season. No other player with 500 minutes topped 3.4 offensive rebounds a game.
The fair critique is finishing. She made 55.4% of her shots within 4 feet of the basket, lowest of the 13 players with 150 such tries; the league made 65.1%. That jumped in late August and September, and the playoffs kept only part of the gain.
Reese owns the three best rebounding seasons since 2019
She had 10 or more rebounds in 34 of 43 games and never fewer than 5. Her 26 at Los Angeles on Aug. 24 broke the WNBA single-game record of 24, Chamique Holdsclaw's since 2003 (AP).
Reese reached 10 rebounds in 34 of 43 games
- Rates agree with totals: a 23.4% total rebound rate, the highest of any 1,000-minute season in our data.
- Records: 521 rebounds and 206 offensive rebounds, both WNBA single-season records. The schedule grew to 44 games in 2025, but she leads per game too.
- 'Mebounds': 52 of her 189 tracked offensive rebounds (27.5%) followed her own miss, against a 22.3% league rate. Without them she still had about 3.3 a game off teammates' misses, the league's most.
She lives at the rim and finishes there below the league rate
Two-thirds of her shots (345 of 515 tracked) came within 4 feet of the basket. She made 55.4% of them; the league made 65.1%.
Most of Reese's shots come within 4 feet, and too many of them miss
| Zone | FG | Pct | League |
|---|---|---|---|
| Within 4 feet | 191/345 | 55.4% | 65.1% |
| Other twos | 32/117 | 27.4% | 40.9% |
| Threes | 11/53 | 20.8% | 33.7% |
- Lowest of 13 players with 150 tries within 4 feet. Kamilla Cardoso, 2nd in attempts (336), made 60.1%.
- Not just putbacks: on non-putback tries within 4 feet she made 56.0% (league 65.5%); on putbacks and tips, 52.5% (league 63.7%).
- Free throws soften it: 0.49 free throws per shot (league 0.29) at 72.1%. Her true shooting, 52.4%, still ranks 90th of 121 players with 500 minutes.
- Better every year: 48.1% within 4 feet in 2024, 53.1% in 2025, 55.4% in 2026. The gap to the league shrank from 15.5 points to 9.7.
Her late-season finishing jump was real on the court, and it cooled in the playoffs
After a missed potential game-winning layup against Indiana on Aug. 16, she made 73.8% of her shots within 4 feet over the last 10 regular-season games, up from 49.4%.
Reese went from far below the league at the rim to above it, then settled at about league rate
- Every shot type improved: cuts 60.0% to 94.1%, drives and runners 45.9% to 71.4%, putbacks 48.9% to 62.5%. The mix barely moved, so it was finishing, not shot selection.
- Small sample, chosen date: 84 attempts in 10 games. The jump is too big to be noise alone, but the split date was picked after the fact, which flatters any before-and-after.
- Playoffs: 61.0% within 4 feet vs a 62.0% league rate (11 of 12 games).
- History: a player's rate within 4 feet correlates 0.60 from one season to the next (2023-2026), against 0.93 for rebound rate.
The Defensive Player of the Year case rests on ending possessions
Atlanta (30-14) ranked 3rd in defensive rating. With Reese on the floor it allowed 7.9 fewer points per 40 minutes than without her.
- Most of the on/off gap was defense: 7.9 fewer points allowed, 1.7 more scored. On/off reflects who she played with, so read it as direction, not size.
- Shot-contest tracking doesn't help her case: opponents made 49.8% when she was the closest defender, vs 46.8% on those shots normally (27 tracked games).
In the Finals, Atlanta went as Reese's scoring went
Golden State won in seven. Reese averaged 22.0 points on 22 of 46 shooting in Atlanta's three wins and 9.3 on 12 of 38 in its four losses.
Reese scored 22 a game in Atlanta's Finals wins and 9.3 in its losses
- Rebounding held: 90 rebounds in the series, a Finals record (AP), and 12.0 a game even in losses.
- Game 7: 8 points on 3 of 7 shooting, 12 rebounds and 4 turnovers in a 68-63 loss.

Critics moved from 'mebounds' to finishing. Only the second holds up.
- AP's Doug Feinberg (Oct. 14): "Online keyboard warriors came up with the phrase 'mebounds' to call attention to Reese grabbing her own misses."
- The Sporting News' Jeremy Beren (Aug. 26): "mebounds make up just 25.4 percent of her total offensive boards."
- The Ringer's Seerat Sohi (Oct. 16): "She misses so many shots that it's only natural for her to be in position to rebound them."
What the data adds: her own-miss share is 5 points above the league's, and she leads the league without those rebounds. The finishing critique is the fair one. The late surge was real, but the playoffs landed her near the league rate, not above it.
Expect the rebounding to hold and the finishing to stay below the league
Rebound rate barely moves year to year; rim finishing moves a lot. A simple model fit on every WNBA player's consecutive seasons projects her 2027 like this.
Reese projects to lead in rebounding again and to stay below the league at the rim
Total rebound rate23.4% in 2026
FG% within 4 feet55.4% in 2026; league 65.1%- Rebounding: 22.3% would still have led 2026 among 1,000-minute players (Kiki Iriafen was next at 21.0%).
- Finishing: the model pulls everyone toward the league. Three straight seasons 10 to 16 points below it point to the low end of the band; her last 10 regular-season games point to the high end.
What would change it: a full season at or above the league's rate within 4 feet (about 65%). Her late-season stretch says she can; the playoffs say not yet.

How we did this: Snapp's WNBA warehouse: box scores, play-by-play with shot coordinates, NBA.com on/off and defender tracking; regular season and playoffs through Oct. 31, 2026 (Finals Game 7). Coverage starts in 2019, so 'since 2019' means our data, not all-time. Rebound rates and true shooting are the warehouse's advanced rates, with a 500-minute minimum unless stated. Shots near the basket: field goal attempts within 4 feet of the hoop by play-by-play shot location, blocked shots counted as misses; the league made 65.1% of these in the 2026 regular season (62.0% in the playoffs). This is the same definition our 2026 WNBA Finals article uses. Coordinates miss two regular-season games (June 11 and 14) and one playoff game (Sept. 26); checked against the distance in each play's text, the mean error is 0.4 feet. 'Mebounds' are offensive rebounds whose preceding miss was her own. On/off is per 40 minutes from NBA.com. Projection: regressions of each player's next season on this one (rebound rate since 2019, 382 pairs, 500+ minutes; percentage within 4 feet since 2023, 55 pairs, 100+ attempts, typical miss 3.7 points); the band is the typical miss.
